John Robert Coggins got his B.S. from Auburn University in 1979 and continued on to Medical School at Vanderbilt University until 1983. He interned and completed his residency at Ochsner Foundation Hospital, New Orleans and completed in 1986.

He currently works as a Gastroenterologist, WellStar Medical Group, Gastroenterology, LaGrange, Georgia. He has an affiliation with Wellstar West Georgia Medical Center and Surgery Center in LaGrange, GA and has been a Senior Associate Consultant at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida and the Gastroenterology Center of West Georgia, LaGrange, Georgia. He holds additional professional positions such as Hospital Leadership Chief of the Performance Improvement Committee, WGMC, Past President of the Medical Center (Two Terms), WGMC, Physician Enterprise Council, Wellstar, Past Member of the Board of Trustees, West Georgia Health
