Markell Heilbron is the Environmental Affairs Manager for Lab and Field Services at Alabama Power Company. In this role, Markell is responsible for leading groups who provide laboratory, technical, and field services necessary to maintain environmental compliance for company operations. Previously, Markell was Manager of Environmental Compliance and Water Technology for Southern Company Technical Services. She was responsible for leading teams who supported Southern Company Generation by managing system environmental compliance, water chemistry, water treatment and air emissions testing.

Since joining Southern Company in 1998, Markell has held positions in Alabama Power, Georgia Power and Southern Company Services. She began her Southern career in Human Resources and later transitioned into Power Delivery as Assistant To the General Manager of Planning and Support at Georgia Power Company. She also served as a Distribution Engineer in both Georgia Power and Alabama Power. In 2006, she was named Assistant To the Vice President of Environmental Affairs at Georgia Power and was selected to be the Environmental Lab Services Manager at Georgia Power in 2008.

Prior to joining Southern Company, Markell was a plant engineer with Milliken & Company for almost three years. She was responsible for oversight of environmental compliance, process reliability and quality maintenance.

A native of Alabama, Markell is a graduate of Auburn University where she earned a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering. She also completed a master’s in business administration with a finance concentration at Mercer University. She serves as a board member of Auburn University’s 100 Women Strong and on the Alabama Chapter of The Nature Conservancy Board of Trustees.

Markell and her husband, Jim, reside in Birmingham with their two children.
